Open call for entries: PHOTO-EXHIBITION "URBAN RUINS"
Organised by: Udruga Kreativni Krk (Creative Krk Association) as a part of Festival “The Labour Day Incubator 2016”, Krk, Croatia
Held at: Decumanus Gallery, Krk, Croatia
Submission dates: Feb 10 – March 25, 2016
We invite photographers and visual artists to submit their works for a juried group exhibition which will be held from May 6 to May 19, 2016 in the town of Krk (Croatia) as a part of the "Labour Day Incubator" Festival.
About 2016 "Incubator": This year's 6th annual Labour Day Incubator (Prvomajski inkubator) is a music/artistic/educational festival organized by Creative Krk Associaton /Udruga Kreativni Krk (NGO). Given that one of the main objectives of the Association is encouraging creativity and building a platform for undiscovered and new talents, art exhibition is once again one of the thematically related festival events. “Incubator" celebrates 1st May-Labour Day and covers topics that show the state of the labour market, economy, productive sector, etc. What we are witnessing is factories and production facilities, that were once the backbone of economic development and symbols of their regions, shutting down on a daily basis (for example, a recently closed Zagreb pencil factory, which was the most important factory of school supplies in Croatia). Losing their role, these "live" architectural bodies suddenly become empty and abandoned skeletons.
What we are looking for: In recent years, a new trend of photography has been emerging and it focuses on photographing the so-called urban ruins (abandoned buildings, hotels, factories, machinery, etc.) in the cities and in their vicinity. This kind of photography finds aesthetics in abandonment and deterioration of buildings, architectural complexes and parts of the city, and encourages debates about the importance of art in the revitalization and restoration projects in the (post) industrial zones. Apart from its documentary value, photography provides a wide range of artistic interpretations of the photographed object. This is an invitation to young artists to become urban explorers and, other than purely documenting urban ruins, give their views on the aesthetics of decay. We also want them to explore their own relations (or relations of today's people in general) with these architectural witnesses of recent past. We encourage participants to fully explore the subject and to approach it contemporarily.
Selected works will be exhibited at the renowned Decumanus Gallery in the town of Krk (Croatia), and on the Creative Krk Association's website.
